Why Can't I Select Text in This PDF? It's Probably an Image

October 14, 2026 · PDF Tools

You open a PDF, try to copy a sentence, and… nothing. Your cursor just drags a box, or worse, you can't even select the content. The frustration is real, and the reason is almost always the same: what looks like text on your screen is actually an image.

Text vs. Image: What's the Difference?

Think of it like the difference between a typewritten page and a photograph of that page. A typewritten page has characters you can manipulate — highlight, search, copy. A photograph of that page is just a grid of pixels. It looks like text, but the computer only sees colors and shapes, not individual letters or words.

This usually happens when a document has been scanned, faxed, or converted from an image file (like a JPEG or PNG) directly into a PDF. There are no underlying characters for your software to grab onto.

Making Unselectable Text Selectable

To make text selectable, the PDF needs to undergo Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This process analyzes the image of the text and tries to identify the characters within it, creating a hidden layer of actual, selectable text behind the visible image.

So, the next time you can't select text, remember: it's not a bug, it's a picture. And pictures need a little help to become searchable, highlightable words.
